Why is my plumbing business not showing in Google AI Overviews?
You search "emergency plumber near me" or ask ChatGPT who to call for a blocked drain, and two or three other plumbers get named — not you. Here's what an AI Overview is actually doing differently, the four most common reasons a plumber gets left out, and how to check it yourself.
An AI Overview is not the old ten blue links
A classic Google results page lists ten or more links and lets you, the searcher, decide who to call. An AI Overview — and an answer from ChatGPT or Gemini — does something different: it reads across the web and then names two or three specific businesses as its answer, with no list of alternatives to scroll past. If your plumbing business isn't one of those two or three names, you don't show up lower down the page. You don't show up at all.
That's a real change for a plumber who depends on "near me" searches. It also means the old advice — rank on page one, get clicks — doesn't map cleanly onto this. The question is no longer "where do I rank", it's "am I one of the two or three names the assistant actually says out loud".
The four most common reasons a plumber is absent
- Too few reviews. If a nearby competitor has 80 Google reviews and you have 12, an assistant comparing businesses has a lot more recent evidence to point to for them than for you.
- No recent reviews. A big pile of reviews from three years ago reads differently from a steady trickle of reviews this month. Recency seems to matter at least as much as total count.
- Name, address or phone number that differs between directories. If your Google Business Profile says "J. Smith Plumbing Ltd" and your Yelp or Bing Places listing says "Smith Plumbing & Heating" with an old phone number, that mismatch makes your listing harder to match up and trust across sources.
- No replies on existing reviews. A listing where every review, good or bad, sits unanswered for years can look unmanaged next to a competitor who replies within days.
None of these are confirmed as "the" ranking factor — nobody outside Google publishes the actual mechanism. These are the four patterns we see most often when a plumber is missing and a nearby competitor isn't.
Check it yourself: plumbing-specific prompts
Open a fresh or private session and try your actual town in place of <town>:
- best plumber near <town> for a blocked drain
- who should I call about a boiler leak in <town>
- emergency plumber callout <town> tonight
Example: "best plumber near Dublin for a blocked drain", "who should I call about a boiler leak in Dublin", "emergency plumber callout Dublin tonight".
Notice the difference in phrasing: a blocked drain is routine, a boiler leak is urgent but not always emergency, and an emergency callout at night is a different situation again. These often return a different shortlist of businesses from each other — a plumber who shows up for "best plumber near me" during the day may not be named at all for "emergency callout tonight", and vice versa. If you only ever test one phrasing, you're only seeing one slice of how your business shows up.
This is observed behaviour, not a documented ranking system
To be plain about what we actually know: nobody outside Google, OpenAI or Google's Gemini team has published how these assistants decide which two or three businesses to name. What we and you can do is run the same prompts repeatedly and watch what comes back. AI answers vary between runs — the same question, typed again an hour later, can return a different list of plumbers. They also change over time as the underlying listings and reviews change. A single run, good or bad, is one data point, not a verdict. Three separate sessions at different times of day is the minimum before a pattern means anything.
If you'd rather not run this by hand
Rick runs the same plumbing-specific prompts for your trade and town, in ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, across at least three separate sessions at different times. You get a short PDF: which plumbers were named instead of you, how your listings and reviews compare to theirs, and the three to five changes most likely to help.
